Masaaki Shirakawa

Governor Masaaki Shirakawa joined the Bank of Japan in 1972, after graduating from the University of Tokyo with a B.A. degree in Economics. Throughout his successful career with the Bank, he has assumed a number of jobs with increasing responsibility.

At the Bank of Japan, Mr. Shirakawa has held a number of senior positions. In 1990 he served as Director, Head of Financial System Division at the Financial and Payment System Office. In 1993, he headed the Planning Division Policy Office. In 1994-1994 he served as General Manager for Oita Branch and General Manager for the Americas.




In 1996-1997 Mr. Shirakawa was Deputy Director-General of the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies and for International Department. Since 1997, Mr. Shirakawa advised to the Governor on a number of issues, including Credit and Market Management, Financial Markets and Policy Planning Office. Mr. Shirakawa was appointed the Executive Director in 2002.

In addition to his policy work with the Bank of Japan, Governor Shirakawa worked in academia, as a Professor at the Kyoto University School of Government in 2006.  

In March 2008 Masaaki Shirakawa was appointed Deputy Governor of Bank of Japan and a month later, in April 2008, he became Governor of Bank of Japan.
