Ernest Stern*
Senior Advisor, The Rohatyn Group; Former Managing Director; The World Bank
Ernest Stern is a Partner in The Rohatyn Group, a global asset management firm headquartered in New York investing exclusively in emerging markets. Mr. Stern is a former Managing Director of J.P. Morgan Chase where he reported to the Co-Chief Executive Officer of J.P. Morgan, the investment bank of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Mr. Stern was the senior client relationship manager for J.P. Morgan's activities in Emerging Markets.
Before joining J.P. Morgan, Mr. Stern worked for the World Bank for 23 years in various roles, including Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Managing Director from December 1991 through January 1995. He was Acting President on numerous occasions. As Managing Director, he had oversight of World Bank operations in South Asia, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union, as well as of Finance and Private Sector Development and the Bank's Treasury operations and budget. Prior to joining the World Bank Mr. Stern was Assistant Administrator in USAID. He joined USAID in 1959 and served overseas in Turkey (5 years), India (2 years), and Pakistan (1 year). Mr. Stern also served as the Deputy Executive Secretary and Staff Director of the Commission on International Development (the Pearson Commission) in 1968-69, and as Senior Staff Member of the White House Council on International Economic Policy in 1971.
Mr. Stern is a member of The Group of Thirty and is currently on the Board of, ShoreCapInternational (a subsidiary of Shore Bank, Chicago). He served on the Boards of Directors of Bank Handlowy (Warsaw, Poland), the Institute of International Finance (Washington, D.C.), the U.S.-Russia Business Council (Washington, D.C.), the Center for Global Development (Washington, D.C.), and the Common Fund.
Mr. Stern has a Ph.D. in International Economics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
